Male Choir "Brodosplit" was founded in 1972. This choir has become one of the most appreciated choirs in Croatia throughout its work, wide range of numerous performances, interesting programmes, valuable interpretations, distinctive sonority and compact quality of voices.

"Resurrection" is the name of the oratorio written by the melographer, arranger, composer and conductor Ljubo Stipišić for the Male Choir "Brodosplit". The first oratorio of a Croatian composer with the theme of the Resurrection was recorded by the Split Choir in December 2016 in the Assunta studio of Vatican Radio - as the first non-Roman choir to receive such an honor.

After that, the oratorio became part of the radio program and was a great success of the Choir and at the same time a top promotion of Croatian musical heritage. The soundtrack was the starting point after which "Brodosplit" decided to make a film and the screenplay were written by Matko Petrić, also the president of the Choir Mladen Velat and their artistic director and conductor Vlado Sunko.

Maestro Sunko says about Stipišić's musical work: Oratorio “Resurrection” were composed on the foundations of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which were dramatically adapted to the speech of old Split by Ljubo Stipišić Delmata. The oratorio were created in 2003, and ideologically and formally it is a continuation of his already well-known work "Calvary", an oratorio for mixed choir and sola a cappella, composed ten years before.

Stipišić finds melodies and motifs in various layers of folk church and Glagolitic tunes, as well as in Dalmatian klapa songs - he says. The oratorio has seven smaller parts: "In front of the tomb of Jesus", "The Lord on the road to Emmaus", "Jesus appears to the disciples", "Jesus, Thomas and the disciples", "On the shores of the Tiberias", "Jesus and Simon Peter", On the mountain in Galilee ”, and solo parts are sung by Ivan Žitko (Jesus), Vinko Marojević (Evangelist), Ante Kovačević (Peter Simon), Ivan Bošnjak (Thomas / Gemini), Damir Radovan (Angel and Disciple One), Eduard Grenc (The Second Disciple, Kleofa) and Stjepan Mihanović (Patriarch).

To visualize one such musical work with the tools of visual art is an unusual task that director Matko Petrić has been thinking about for a long time: - I am musician and I wanted to follow what author of the oratorio felt and that was the most important thing for me- the director recalls. Recordings from Katuni, Komiža - The film is a reflection of music, and the mood is melancholic, sluggish, the work is done in the tradition of old Split singing. In the end, I opted for the art concept. In addition to some of the documentary and feature material in the film, I made one part as an artistic association. In a topic that is big in itself, I definitely wanted to avoid kitsch. I combined real and imagined, real situations with daydreaming, it was a brave decision, I would say.

In the documentary part, I used recordings of the "Brodosplit" concert in the churches in Katuni, Komiža and the now destroyed by earthquake Church of the Heart of Jesus in Zagreb, where they performed Stipišić's oratorio. Part of it is from a recording in the Vatican studio, and part in the great hall in Diocletian's cellars, in the ambience of Roman culture. Some materials were created in sites typical of the Mediterranean and the place of Jesus' appearance: in the rocky ambiance, among the Mediterranean vegetation, by the sea. The picture of Jesus and Simon Peter fishing is taken during a night fishing trip on Vis, on a fishing boat, and the finale is in Solin's stonepit in a harsh, cataclysmic environment.

Jesus appears for the last time ... The choir sings, and it was filmed from a great height, by drone, and the singers leave ... There is more earth than heaven. Because Jesus was resurrected, and we have not learned anything, we are here, in this "valley of tears", it is imposed as a symbolism - says Matko Petrić.
