City of Split Choir Brodosplit
Brodosplit men's choir unobtrusively and without great ambitions was launched in 1972 under the auspices of the Split shipyard and became a quality recognizable at the level of the state at that time, as well as on the first European trips.
As the most recognizable ambassadors of their city with their work, number of performances, interesting program, value of interpretation, singing culture, distinctive sonority and compactness of voices, they became the most trophy-winning Croatian amateur choir and one of the most respected choirs in Croatia.
The choir's repertoire is very diverse, from Renaissance masters to contemporary authors, with particular care for the traditions of the homeland, i.e. the Dalmatian folk and concert songs in harmonization and arrangements by the most appreciated Croatian composers.
Since its foundation, the choir has been directed by distinguished pedagogues and conductors: prof. Daniel Šeparović, prof. Josip Veršić and Prof. Vlado Sunko.
Choir is a complex musical organism in which each singer plays the role of an organ. With his voice, he colors a certain section and gives strength and emotion to the overall fusion. The conductor, at the same time the choir's artistic director, mixes, blends, shapes and filigrees each tone in each composition so that it arouses attention and provokes listeners to a unique experience in the performance of a particular choir.
The Brodosplit City Choir is fortunate that for more than 3 and a half decades, since 1988, it has been led not only by a conductor but and one of the greatest living Croatian composers, maestro Vlado Sunko. Thanks to the knowledge, vision, dedication, creative innovation and perseverance of maestro Vlado Sunko, this choir has achieved top artistic results, especially with performances of great works such as the anthology performance of Boris Papandopoulos's oratorio The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Cherubini's Requiem, Stipišić's oratorio Resurrection and Sunko's cantata Gold of Our Lady's Grace and Missa .
In the spirit of the proverb of the French philosopher Jean Jaurès: Tradition does not consist in keeping the ashes but in keeping the flame alive, in that musical - the precious part of the historical score was sung by Split choirs, and the Brodosplit City Choir is most deserving of preserving this laudable tradition.
In addition to the most prestigious professional awards, throughout the homeland and abroad, they also received numerous social awards from the city of Split awards (1979, 1994 and 2012), the medal of the city of Split (2002 and 2022), the awards of the Split-Dalmatia County (2002 and 2018), and even the Charter of the Republic of Croatia (2013) for special merits to culture, which the City Choir Brodosplit had as an international promoter of Croatian cultural heritage and winner of world awards in choral singing on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its successful activity.
Among the many competitive awards, we should highlight the gold medal at the World Choir Games in Xiamen, China (2006), the title of Olympic winner at the Choir Olympics in Linz (2000), the Champion of the World Choir Games in Graz (2008) and third place, as the first choir in the history of that non-Baltic competition, at the International Male Choir Competition "Leevi Madetoja" in Finland (2010).
In addition to his rich concert activity, choir also released two LPs, ten CDs, two DVDs and two monographs on the occasion of the 30th and 50th anniversaries.
Music in the life of this climate is the umbilical cord with the ancestral heritage, the secular and the spiritual, but also a credible protagonist in the political arena in which, among swords and guns, notes and words - music and language - were found as weapons in the struggle for national identity.
